Coherent Infrared Radiation from the Als Generated via Femtosecond Laser Modulation of the Electron Beam*

چکیده
Interaction of an electron beam with a femtosecond laser pulse co-propagating through a wiggler at the ALS produces large modulation of the electron energies within a short ~100 fs slice of the electron bunch. Propagating around the storage ring, this bunch develops a longitudinal density perturbation due to the dispersion of electron trajectories. The length of the perturbation evolves with a distance from the wiggler but is much shorter than the electron bunch length. This perturbation causes the electron bunch to emit short pulses of temporally and spatially coherent infrared light which are automatically synchronized to the modulating laser. The intensity and spectra of the infrared light were measured in two storage ring locations for a nominal ALS lattice and for an experimental lattice with the higher momentum compaction factor. The onset of instability stimulated by laser e-beam interaction had been discovered. The infrared signal is now routinely used as a sensitive monitor for a fine tuning of the laser beam alignment during data accumulation in the experiments with femtosecond x-ray pulses. Figure 1. A schematic of the laser electron beam interaction producing fs x-ray pulses.

Generating ultrashort coherent soft X-ray radiation in storage rings using angular-modulated electron beams.
A technique is proposed to generate ultrashort coherent soft x-ray radiation in storage rings using angular-modulated electron beams. In the scheme a laser operating in the TEM01 mode is first used to modulate the angular distribution of the electron beam in an undulator. After passing through a special beam line with nonzero transfer matrix element R54, the angular modulation is converted to d...
متن کاملRadiation from Laser-modulated and Laser-sliced Electron Bunches in Uvsor-ii*
It was successfully demonstrated at UVSOR-II that, by using an external laser source, various micro-density structures such as a femtosecond dip or periodic modulation could be created on an electron bunch circulating in a storage ring. The bunch with femtosecond dip emitted broadband coherent synchrotron radiation. That with periodic density modulation emitted coherent and monochromatic terahe...

Modern, high-brightness electron beams such as those from plasma wakefield accelerators and free-electron laser linacs continue the drive to ever-shorter bunch durations. In low-charge operation (~20 pC), bunches shorter than 10 fs are reported at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). Though suffering from a loss of phase information, spectral diagnostics remain appealing as compact, low-cost...
متن کاملA Novel Diagnostics of Ultrashort Electron Bunches Based on Detection of Coherent Radiation from Bunched Electron Beam in an Undulator
We propose a new method for measurements of the longitudinal profile of 100 femtosecond electron bunches for X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). The method is based on detection of coherent undulator radiation produced by modulated electron beam. Seed optical quantum laser is used to produce exact optical replica of ultrashort electron bunches. The replica is generated in apparatus which consis...

Among the attractive coherent light sources resulting from the interaction between femtosecond lasers and relativistic electron beams, simultaneous Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) in the THz region, slicing and UV-VUV Coherent Harmonic Generation (CHG) can be achieved on synchrotron radiation facilities. Recently, a Ti:Sa laser at high repetition rate (1 kHz) has been seeded in the optical...
